The Nigerian Youth Congress (NYC), Osun State Chapter, has strongly condemned recent calls by some civil society organisations for the declaration of a state of emergency in Osun State, describing the move as unpatriotic and hostile to Nigeria’s democratic order.
Addressing journalists in Osogbo on Monday, the youth body said the demand for emergency rule over the local government situation was a direct attack on constitutional governance and an attempt to undermine democratic institutions.
In a statement signed by its State Chairman, Comrade Olayemi Olaribigbe, and read by Director of Media, Sasona Mayowa, the Congress accused the promoters of the call of working against national interest and portraying Nigeria’s democracy as incapable of resolving internal disputes.
According to the NYC, agitating for emergency powers in a state that remains peaceful and governed by constitutional processes “amounts to an unpatriotic act” and reflects what it described as “enemy-of-democracy behaviour.”
The Congress warned that such actions, if unchecked, could erode public confidence in democratic governance and destabilise grassroots administration, stressing that local government challenges must be addressed through lawful and institutional means.
“The call for a state of emergency at this time is reckless, inflammatory, and capable of escalating political tension,” the statement read, adding that pushing for federal intervention where legal remedies exist “borders on actions that weaken the Nigerian state.”
The youth body further stated that attempts to invite emergency rule over political disagreements were “dangerous precedents” that negate democratic values and could be interpreted as an assault on constitutional order.
The NYC also cautioned against efforts to incite youths or exploit civic platforms to manufacture crisis, warning that such conduct undermines peace and threatens socio-economic stability at the grassroots.
Reaffirming Osun State’s record of relative peace, the Congress said any agenda capable of plunging the state into avoidable uncertainty must be resisted by all well-meaning citizens.
It called on relevant authorities, security agencies and judicial institutions to beware of unregistered organizations whose faces have exhibited traitor-tendencies, and may become guilty of treason.
The Nigerian Youth Congress urged young people across Osun State to remain calm, law-abiding, and vigilant, and not allow themselves to be used as tools for political unrest or actions that could destabilise the state.
The statement concluded by affirming the Congress’ commitment to peace, democratic continuity, and responsible civic engagement, stressing that “dialogue, the rule of law, and respect for democratic institutions remain the only acceptable paths forward.”
