The Osun State Government has spotlighted significant progress in agriculture under Governor Ademola Adeleke, with new data showing expanded planting in cocoa, cashew, and oil palm, alongside increased mechanised farming output.
Detailing the development in a statement, the Governor’s Spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, said the administration has recorded “remarkable strides” in repositioning agriculture as a key driver of economic growth in the state.
According to the statement, over 400,000 cocoa seedlings have been planted between 2023 and now, with distribution made available to farmers at subsidised rates to encourage widespread participation.
Rasheed quoted Governor Adeleke as expressing satisfaction with the progress, noting that the state is steadily reclaiming its position among Nigeria’s leading cocoa producers.
Cashew, Oil Palm Expansion Strengthens Diversification Drive
The statement further revealed that 80,000 cashew seedlings and 60,000 oil palm seedlings have also been planted within the same period, as part of a deliberate effort to diversify Osun’s agricultural base.
Governor Adeleke, as quoted by his spokesperson, described the expansion as a strategic push to boost output and develop value chains across the three major cash crops.
Tractor Deployment Sparks Political Contrast
On mechanisation, the statement disclosed that 31 government-acquired tractors are currently deployed across the 30 local governments and the area council, providing subsidised services to farmers.
Despite financial constraints affecting expansion plans, the tractors have already cultivated 4,511 acres of farmland since 2025.
Rasheed quoted the Governor as drawing a comparison with the previous administration, noting that the current progress marks a significant shift in approach to agricultural development.
Farmers Back Government as Sector Gains Momentum
The statement also highlighted ongoing distribution of farm inputs to farmers since the inception of the administration, reinforcing what it described as a pro-farmer policy direction.
Governor Adeleke, according to the statement, expressed appreciation to the Osun State Farmers’ Association for endorsing his re-election, attributing the support to the administration’s consistent focus on farmers’ welfare.
With expanding plantations, improved mechanisation, and growing stakeholder support, the Osun government says its agricultural reforms are gaining traction as part of a broader strategy to strengthen the state’s economy.
