International attention is shifting to the August 15 Osun State governorship election as the European Union Election Observer Mission and the British Embassy confirmed plans to monitor the electoral process, while Governor Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke reaffirmed his commitment to free, fair and credible elections.
The development came as Governor Adeleke also launched a major sustainability initiative with the unveiling of electric motorcycles and the signing of a partnership to introduce electric vehicles into government operations, marking another milestone in his administration's drive towards a green economy.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Government House, Osogbo, the Austrian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Peter Guschelbauer, disclosed that the European Union would deploy an Election Observer Mission to monitor the Osun governorship election in line with its longstanding commitment to promoting democratic governance and electoral integrity.
According to the Ambassador, the Osun election is of strategic importance because it serves as a precursor to Nigeria's 2027 general elections, making strict compliance with electoral laws and democratic principles imperative.
Mr. Guschelbauer, accompanied by the embassy's Political Adviser, commended Governor Adeleke for his governance style and urged all political actors to conduct themselves peacefully and in accordance with democratic norms.
He also highlighted the longstanding cultural ties between Austria and Osun State, particularly through the globally renowned Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, expressing Austria's interest in expanding collaboration in cultural preservation, tourism, trade and investment.
Responding, Governor Adeleke welcomed the European Union's decision to observe the election, describing international election observation as a critical mechanism for strengthening electoral credibility and encouraging compliance with Nigeria's Electoral Act.
"Our government remains committed to free and fair elections as well as creating an enabling environment for investors and development partners. Osun State offers immense opportunities in agriculture, renewable energy, education, technology, mining and vocational development. We are ready to work with your country and Austrian businesses in exploring these opportunities for mutual growth and prosperity," the Governor said.
In another indication of growing international interest in the Osun poll, a delegation from the British Embassy is expected in the state this week for consultations with key stakeholders as part of its pre-election assessment ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
The international engagements come amid heightened political activities across the state, with attention increasingly focused on ensuring a peaceful, transparent and credible electoral process.
Meanwhile, Governor Adeleke has intensified his administration's sustainability agenda with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Osun State Government and Green Apple HK Nigeria Limited for the deployment of electric vehicles across government ministries, departments and agencies before extending the initiative to public transportation.
The Governor announced the agreement while unveiling the first batch of electric motorcycles under the Imole Electric Motorbikes Initiative, describing the partnership as a significant step towards building a cleaner, more efficient and cost-effective transportation system.
Commending the lead partner of Green Apple HK Nigeria Limited, Ibukun Demurreen, Governor Adeleke said the electric mobility project would reduce transportation costs, protect the environment and improve the quality of life for residents.
"Very soon, Osun will see tricycles running on electricity. You will see cars running on electricity. You will see buses running on electricity right here in Osun State. This is what we are building for you: a future where you spend less on fuel and keep more for your family, your children and your business," the Governor stated.
The twin developments, international election monitoring and the launch of a clean transportation programme, further underscore Osun State's growing profile as preparations intensify for the August 15 governorship election while the Adeleke administration continues to roll out initiatives aimed at sustainable development and economic transformation.
