The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has commended the Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, for his administration's commitment to improving the welfare of resident doctors through the implementation of key financial benefits aimed at strengthening the state's healthcare system.
In a statement issued by its President and obtained by OneForAllMedia, Dr. Mohammad Usman Suleiman, the association listed Osun among the few states setting commendable standards in the welfare of resident doctors, describing the Adeleke administration's interventions as a reflection of visionary leadership and genuine investment in the healthcare workforce.
NARD specifically applauded Governor Adeleke for approving and implementing the Professional Allowance Table (PAT), Specialist Allowance (SA), the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF), Annual Leave Bonus, and Accoutrement Allowance for resident doctors in the state's tertiary health institutions.
According to the association, these measures demonstrate the Governor's resolve to create a conducive working environment for medical professionals while improving healthcare service delivery for the people of Osun State.
The association noted that, at a time when Nigeria continues to battle the challenge of brain drain, shortage of doctors, and poor doctor-patient ratios, governments that prioritise the welfare of healthcare professionals are making strategic investments in stronger and more effective healthcare systems.
While acknowledging similar efforts by a handful of other state governments, NARD singled out Osun and Plateau States for special commendation over the breadth of their interventions for resident doctors.
The association also urged other state governments yet to implement similar welfare packages to emulate the example set by Governor Ademola Adeleke and other proactive governors by approving the Professional Allowance Table, Specialist Allowance, Accoutrement Allowance, and the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund for doctors under their employment.
NARD further called on the Nigerian Governors' Forum to encourage all state governments to place greater priority on the welfare of resident doctors, stressing that better motivation for healthcare workers ultimately translates into improved healthcare outcomes for Nigerians.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to engaging constructively with governments across the country to advance healthcare delivery while protecting the welfare, training, and professional development of resident doctors.
"When doctors are valued, healthcare thrives," the association stated.
